I came across a video that piqued my curiosity. Many zippers have the letters ‘YKK’ embossed on them. I just checked. My light jacket and my winter parka both had such zippers.
About 10 billion YKK zippers are sold every year. They open and close on clothing folks wear daily to NASA spacesuits. The zipper embossing stands for Yoshida Kogyo Kabushiki gaisha. Tadao Yoshida founded the Japanese company in 1934.
In summary, the video stated the company “built a business model designed to control nearly every step of how its zippers are made, turning an often overlooked product into a multi-billion dollar global empire.”
They built the company using top-quality materials and more than 100,000 designs to meet almost every possible need.
This company helps define a vertically integrated business. They make almost every part, from research and design to final manufacturing, in-house.
YKK operates in 69 countries and regions. It opened its Canadian plant in 1968.
They are confident in who they are, proud of what they present to the marketplace, and always tweaking to get better.
Please give this a bit of a think. Think of yourself as a company that presents itself to the world every day. What are some quality standards you have for this presentation of self? Honesty even when no one is looking? Compassion towards others? Generosity with your time?
What aspects of yourself do you outsource to others? What about your self-esteem or emotional state? When a driver cuts you off, who controls your emotional response?
Have you limited the different designs you present of yourself? Primarily, is it a very limited number, such as stoic in the face of adversity, quiet or loud personality? Would you like to increase the range of designs you present of yourself?
Please comment: Send me an email with your bit of a think. I am curious about your thoughts.
